THE FAMOUS DUDHSAGAR WATER FALLS (GOA)
Dudhsagar Falls (literally meaning Sea of Milk) is a four-tiered waterfall located on the border of the Indian states of Karnataka and Goa. It is 60 km from Panaji by road, 46 km east of Madgaon on the Madgaon-Belgaum railway line, and 80 km south of Belgaum on the Madgaon-Belgaum railway line. Dudhsagar Falls is one of the highest waterfalls in India, with a height of 310 m (1017 ft) and an average width of 30 m (100 ft).[1][2]
The falls are located between the Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary and Mollem National Park in the Western Ghats. The falls form the boundary between the states of Karnataka and Goa. Surrounded by deciduous forests, the falls are home to a rich biodiversity. Although the waterfall appears quite dry during the dry season, it becomes quite magnificent during the monsoon season when it is filled with water.
How to Reach the Falls
The nearest railway station to the falls is Castle Rock Station, which is accessible by road. Visitors can board a train from here and disembark at the Dudhsagar stop. It is worth noting that the Dudhsagar railway stop is not a station where passengers might expect a platform. Passengers and tourists must climb a steep staircase to reach the train compartment, where it makes unscheduled stops of 1-2 minutes. Recently, the Indian Railways has banned passengers from boarding and disembarking at the Dudhsagar railway station.[3] There are no clean drinking water or clean toilets near the falls. Mobile phone signals are also not available at this location.
One route to reach Dudhsagar Falls is via the taxi route through the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. This route passes through lush forests and gurgling rivers, offering a truly captivating view. Currently, this route is the only route to reach the falls.
There are several accommodation options available, with the most popular being the Dudhsagar Eco and Wildlife Resort (Ajuska Retreat) near the falls. For those interested in watching various bird species, this place is a paradise. Furthermore, you'll find a wide variety of animals and birds in the surrounding forests.
