History

Ladakh's first inhabitants were nomads who arrived with their yaks during the Neolithic period. Later, Buddhist pilgrims traveling from India to Mount Kailash in Tibet settled permanently in the Indus Valley and brought Buddhism, which emerged as the main religion in the region.

For centuries, the kings of Ladakh established a kingdom stretching from Kashmir to Tibet, defended by forts and large monasteries.

Ladakh was frequently attacked by Muslim armies from the west (16th century) and Tibetan armies from the east (17th century). The kingdom revived under the Namgyal dynasty, which expanded the kingdom into Nepal and established a new capital in Leh. During the 19th century, Ladakh was invaded by Dogra forces from Jammu and became part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

On October 31, 2019, Ladakh was separated from the rest of Jammu and Kashmir and became an independent state (Union Territory). Ladakh is divided into two districts: Leh District and Kargil District (which includes Zanskar).

Getting There

Flights from Delhi to Leh operate daily. Flights are fairly reliable in summer, while cancellations are sometimes the case during heavy snowfall in winter. There are 8 flights daily in both directions. Air tickets can be quite expensive during peak season, but the best prices are usually found online. These two websites are convenient for comparing prices: www.yatra.com and www.makemytrip.com. All airlines are roughly the same (Air India, SpiceJet, Vistara, IndiGo), so you can choose the cheapest ticket.

If you want to travel to Ladakh by road, you can use the Manali or Srinagar highways. These roads are closed during winter and usually reopen in May. The two-day road trip can be done by bus or taxi.

Acclimatization

Leh is 3500 meters above sea level, so acclimatization can be difficult due to the high altitude. It is recommended to spend at least two days acclimatizing before setting off on your adventure. Drink plenty of water and other fluids, such as soup, tea, and juice.
