THE BEAUTIFUL HAWA MAHAL

Hawa Mahal is Jaipur's famous royal palace. It was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. Lal Chand Usta was the architect of this unique building. Shaped like a "crown" and constructed of pink sandstone, the palace is located on the main road in Jaipur's commercial center. King Sawai Singh was a great devotee of Lord Krishna, and therefore, the architect was tasked with creating the palace in the shape of Krishna's crown. It is clearly visible from the beginning of Old Jaipur. It is said to be the world's tallest building built without a foundation. This is why Hawa Mahal is tilted at an angle of 87 degrees. Seeing it in the golden light at dawn is a wonderful experience.

It has 953 exquisitely small latticed windows, called Jharokhas. The main entrance to the palace is known as Anandpoli and the other as Chandrapoli. It is said that Hawa Mahal was a favorite resting place of Maharaja Jai Singh. From here, a passage leads to the City Palace, which was used by the royal women to observe festivals like Teej and Gangaur.

This five-story building's latticed windows allow cool air to flow into the palace, making it air-conditioned even during the summer. Fountains are also provided in front of the rooms during the summer. Historically, the Hawa Mahal is named after the fifth floor, the "Hawa Mandir," where the royal family's flag was hoisted. Interestingly, there are no stairs to climb into the palace. Inside the palace are three small temples: the Prakash Mandir, the Govardhan Krishna Mandir, and the Hawa Mandir. On one side of the Prakash Mandir is a canopy for a top view, from which one can see the old city. These temples hold great significance within the palace.

There is no front entrance to the Hawa Mahal; there is a door at the back of the building, allowing back entry. There are numerous chambers inside. The front of the palace features intricately carved lattices, cornices, and domes. The Hawa Mahal was built specifically for the women of the royal palace. The rear of the Hawa Mahal is quite simple. The Hawa Mahal can also be entered through the Royal Gate from the City Palace. It also houses an archaeological museum. The Hawa Mahal is maintained by the Archaeological Department of the Rajasthan government.

The Hawa Mahal is a very important tourist destination.
